Tesla ends Solar Roof project after installing about 3,000 units

Tesla ended its Solar Roof project after installing about 3,000 units in total. The company's peak installation rate was 32 units. Tesla had projected a rate of 1,000 installations per week. No press release or regulatory filing accompanied the shutdown. Tesla's Solar Roof webpage now redirects to a conventional solar panel page. A source said an internal review found that the product was not financially viable. Tesla acquired SolarCity in a stock merger valued at about $2.6 billion in 2016. Tesla opened Solar Roof orders in 2017 at $21.85 per square foot and promised a lifetime warranty. Tesla launched Solar Roof V3 in 2019 with a quoted price of about $33,950 for a 2,000-square-foot roof. Tesla later raised prices for some existing customers and faced lawsuits over the increases. Tesla canceled Solar Roof projects in several states in 2022. Tesla removed online Solar Roof quotes in April 2025 and routed buyers to third-party installers. Tesla told installers on August 20, 2026, that Solar Roof tiles were no longer orderable.
