Luke Dashjr-backed Bitcoin fork switches to BLAKE2b on September 1

The Luke Dashjr-backed Bitcoin hard fork splits from the main chain on September 1. The fork switches to BLAKE2b. Existing Bitcoin machines cannot run BLAKE2b. A proof-of-work change mints a separate coin. Holders face replay risk and must determine which chain their wallets track. Luke Dashjr resigned as chairman and chief technology officer of OCEAN. OCEAN repurchased all of Dashjr's equity. Dashjr calls the main Bitcoin chain "Spamcoin." OCEAN's hashrate fell 96% in August. The pool routed customer power to a minority chain for about 18 hours. Miners demanded leadership changes after they said they had not clearly consented. Dashjr's BIP-110 anti-spam soft fork needed 55% miner support. Signaling peaked at 2.53%. The BIP-110 chain stalled after two blocks. Dashjr argues that Bitcoin lost decentralized block construction years ago. Dashjr says BLAKE2b removes ASICBoost, which he says gives large miners an efficiency advantage. Dashjr also says BLAKE2b punishes concentrated mining power. Adam Back called BIP-110 "idiocracy" in July. David Schwartz dismissed the network-under-attack claim as nonsense. Dashjr says the legacy chain operates under centralized management. Dashjr says the legacy chain prevents miners from building their own templates. Dashjr presents CONVOY as another attempt at decentralized mining. OCEAN continues to operate as a non-custodial pool. Bitcoin traded near $77,655, down 0.59% on the day. Bitcoin had gained 23.3% that month. Hashrate has drifted lower throughout the year as miners moved to artificial intelligence contracts. The lower hashrate reduces the pool of machines that a breakaway chain could recruit. Dashjr recommends a light wallet instead of a full node. The market will price which chain carries value. Dashjr's previous fork attempt received less than 3% support. The split will test whether real hashrate follows BLAKE2b or whether the chain stalls again within hours.
